Los Pitbulls, better known as Alexis y Fido are making there move in the world of Reggaeton. Fido was born in Newark New Jersey. His mother was born in Puerto Rico and decided to move from Jersey to Puerto Rico to raise her son in the place of her birth. When Fido was younger he had the same hair style as Fido Dido and that is where his stage name came from. When Fido recalls when he was around eleven years old, one of Latin Hip-hops best, Vico C began entertaining and making a name for him self around this time. “I started writing my own lyrics when I was eleven. My brother was a DJ and he helped me out a lot and that’s how I started. I loved Reggaeton when I heard the beat and that’s how I started.”
Alexis on the other hand was born and raised in Puerto Rico. “I grew up the normal way. I was raised by my mother and father,” Alexis tells Reggaetonline’s own Eddie Rosa and Quinée Butler in a recent interview in L A. “I was always into the music and the dances. When I was small I also participated in talent shows. When the [hip-hop] movement started I was always with my brother. We listened to some Vico C tracks and became interested. My brother and I started writing our own lyrics. As time went by I was always looking to see how my brother and I could get some Reggaeton connections to get into the industry. It was very difficult because we were in a different part of Puerto Rico from where all the movement was happening. It was very hard to get into the industry”. Eventually, Alexis and his brother found that they could not get into the industry, so they decided to go their separate ways. It was then that Alexis decided to make a move to Pennsylvania where he lived for 5 years and married. “After I got divorced and moved to Puerto Rico again, I realized I still had it in me and wanted to pursue the music career.”
Alexis y Fido were featured on Wisn’s “El Sobrevivente” and Yandel’s “Quien Contra Mi” albums. With this success they both found their niche in Reggaeton. “I used to sing with Wisin way before and Fido sang with Yandel, recalls Alexis. “When I left to Pennsylvania and Fido also left [that was when] Wisin and Yandel hooked up together and made it big in Puerto Rico. When I came back Wisin y Yandel helped me get back on my feet. That’s when Fido and I joined together and slowly but, surely, with Wisin and Yandel's help, we started to get noticed. From that day on, people love the duo Alexis y Fido”. Fido adds, “Wisin y Yandel hooked us up. Alexis got married and then I got married and Wisin Y Yandel hooked up on a duo and made there record. Then when we both got divorced they helped us to get in. And now we are one of the biggest duos in Puerto Rico ‘Alexis y Fido’.”
As with any artists, there may be complications starting off in the music industry. “Like they always say ‘there’s always rock on the road’, or ‘piedras en el camino’,” say Fido. “We had competition, I was always tired, I would perform in shows and then run off to another one, and now we are big it paid off.”
For people who are not familiar with what Reggaeton is exactly, the artists are the best source of information “Its like Caribbean music, it's got elements from the Caribbean, hip hop, techno, its all in one.” Alexis adds, “Reggaeton is great music, even if you don’t understand it with the beat itself it makes you want to dance, the beat is so caliente that it'll make you dance even if you dot know how to dance.” Reggaeton has a history of being a music that people feel is degrades and is derogatory to women. “It’s like every style of music everybody sings about women, some more direct than others, there's a fine line. For example we Alexis y Fido try not to pass that line and maintain our own flavor and not disrespect women. We sing to women so they can enjoy it and so that they can sing with us. We don’t talk bad about them we just try to get them off their feet so they can dance.”
So what future projects will Alexis y Fido bring to the table? “We are working on Los Pitbulls” says Alexis with a smile. “Why the Pitbulls? Because in
Puerto Rico we are known for our energy and we are always going all out just
like a pit-bull”. Alexis then demonstrates the famous "ARRRROOOF!" he
does on every song he has recorded, and lets us know he is the one who does
that sound. “After that sound people in Puerto Rico started calling us ‘Los
Pitbulls’. That’s why the album is called “Los Pitbulls ". Besides that, we've
been working on a video and its one of the most expensive Reggaeton videos in Puerto Rico, It'll be showed on MTV and BET.
Eddie Rosas adds, “I was confused with pit-bull. I thought that was another artist?”To answer his question, Alexis simply answers “Ever since we started to sing we were known as the Pitbulls. Since this was only in Puerto Rico we were unaware that there was another artist in Miami named Pitbull. We noticed there was another Pitbull when Reggaeton started to grow. We were like ‘Dang there's another Pitbull in the U.S.!’ Let there be no confusion he is ‘Pitbull’ and we are ‘Los Pitbulls’ as a duo.”
To add to their list of accomplishments, Fido states, “I was also one of the producers for Daddy Yankee's Barrio Fino album. I produced the songs "Dale Caliente", the one with Wisin y Yandel, "No Me Dejes Solo", and “Que Vas Hacer" with Daddy Yankee and May-be. As you know I am also a producer and work with Luny Tunes. In our upcoming album I am doing all the production, not the beats just producing it to the way I want it to sound. All of our upcoming concerts are selling out.
As all artists do in their interview, Alexis end our session with a reminder to all their fans “Los Pitbulls coming soon papa!” They are two down to earth guys ready to make their place in the world of music. The road to success is not as prominent as the road artists take in the United States. Reggaeton artists like Alexis y Fido are taking it one step at a time and gaining new fans as the go along. Now fans anxiously await their new album Los Pitbulls coming this November.
