By Fabian Baez, Reggaetonline.net

October 11, 2007

It was a beautiful October day. Reggaetonline.net was in Brooklyn at the video shoot for the new single from Reggaeton super duo Alexis and Fido. November 13th the Kings of ‘Perreo’ release their third CD titled ‘Sobrenatural’ (Supernatural). The hit ‘5 Letras’ (5 Letters) has the public excited about what is coming from the Pitbulls of Reggaeton. Reggaetonline had the pleasure of speaking with two humble and talented gentlemen during a break from filming their video. We spoke about how they make such great music, the misunderstandings of some people regarding a music career and the triumph of Reggaeton.

Reggaetonline.net:
What is the formula you guys use to make such provocative songs?
Alexis:
Well, Alexis and Fido have 10 years in this genre. We each have our own style. We have developed a style of double meaning in our songs that has become commercial. We’ve been together as a duo for 4-5 years. Thank God that the people have accepted us. We’re doing our thing with our style and we’ll keep doing it because the people support us.

Reggaetonline.net:
We are here at your latest video shoot, what is the song and what is it about?
Alexis:
The song is called ‘Soy Igual Que Tu’ (I’m The Same As You). We did this song with our labelmate Toby Love. Many say he has one of the most unique voices out right now and we are proud to have him on this song, he’s like our brother. The song deals with the point that women can do the same thing to men as men do to them, as far as, playing with someone’s emotions. We hope people enjoy this song. It’ll be one of the big hits for 2008.

Reggaetonline.net:
What is your new CD called and which artists do you have on there?
Alexis:
The album is called ‘Sobrenatural’ (Supernatural). It has 14 songs. One song is the Yetsons singing alone called ‘We Belong Together’, Toby Love, Erick Right, a new Puerto Rican artist from New Jersey who sings R&B with a crunk/reggaeton style. We got a merengue record that’s like 110 degrees for everyone to really feel a fusion with reggaeton. Our intro for the album has Voltio, Lapiz Conciente, Sofla, he’s an upcoming artist from Miami who has created a buzz. He’s a smart guy who knows what he’s doing. We also have De La Ghetto and Yadel El Leon plus many others.

Reggaetonline.net:
Can you complete the following sentence: Reggaeton for me is…?
Alexis:
For me Reggaeton is a lifestyle, a behavior, culture and something much more.

Reggaetonline.net:
Can you talk about the struggles you guys encountered before reaching success?
Fido:
Well, I’ve been here from the beginning you know. Before Reggaeton started I was ready. I remember selling tapes in Old San Juan. I was a part of all the obstacles that happened professionally early on. A lot of young guys think they can begin singing today and tomorrow they’ll have a record and in reality it’s not like that. You had to as they say ‘eat the stage,’ get up there and prove, move the crowd and show you can excite people, that’s how it was before records were sold. Thank God that as things changed we were able to have some doors open to us professionally speaking. Thanks to Wisin and Yandel who helped us after we were well known underground artists. They had gotten with a record label and once the opportunity came they helped us. Not everything has been perfect, but we keep moving forward. We know how to make ‘perreo’ (sexual style of music). And we’ll make hits today and for 2008 and for 2009 and so on.

Reggaetonline.net:
What is the history that you guys have with Wisin and Yandel?
Fido:
We all know each other since we were kids. We had a group we formed in school and from there we built upon our dream. We have realized our dream. We are very grateful because from that little group back home that we formed in school we have gotten here. That means a lot. That’s why we help others. There are people who have a hit record and others that don’t. It’s not easy.

Reggaetonline.net:
What advice could you give those youngsters that want to enter into Reggaeton?
Fido:
They should be original because the genre is saturated. I’ll be honest with you, of say 40 people I meet in one day maybe 20-22 people don’t’ even ask me about how my career is doing. They say ‘I have a demo for you’ or ‘my little brother sings’ or ‘my son sings.’ There are many that think it’s easy. They see how hard jobs are to get in Puerto Rico so they turn to art to try and make it. I know they see us with nice cars, but they need to know it’s not easy, you understand. It isn’t writing a song and putting it out. Reggaeton is a process, when they realize that they get frustrated and say ‘you guys don’t help us.’ But what they don’t know is that we receive about 100 demos daily from Puerto Rico and other parts of the United States. So it’s very difficult to pick one artist and work with him and invest money to help him succeed.

Reggaetonline.net:
Are you guys producing artists together for ‘Wild Dogz’?
Fido:
Everything is together, the percentage is 50/50. We’re completing the Yetsons project, they are a different group. We are trying to see if we can get them work with Aventura. God willing, maybe do something with Don Omar. We are going to keep doing things with the Yetsons and there’s a lot coming up too.

For me Reggaeton is the music that represents Latinos, that represents the ghetto. For the poor people, it has shown society that those who are down can achieve, you know. I am very proud to be a part of this movement because we’ve shown. Still many don’t believe and we keep selling records. Every time an Alexis and Fido album comes out we sell about 300,000 units, Daddy Yankee about 1 million, Wisin and Yandel about 1 million, Don Omar about 1 million so then what happened there. There are American artists that spend more money making their music and never reach 300,000 units.
