By Fabian Baez, Reggaetonline.net

October 28, 2007

Reggaetonline.net had the pleasure of speaking with Baby Ranks on the video set for a song he’s featured on with LDA titled ‘Por Ti (For You). Baby spoke about his career, his success with ‘Mas Flow’ and how music evolves.

Reggaetonline.net: Can you comment on your start in this industry?

Baby Ranks: I have 11-12 years working in reggaeton. I started about 10 years ago with DJ Negro in something that was urban, underground. It started with Baby Rasta & Gringo, Vico C you know that was the beginning of reggaeton. Then the music evolved and became what it is today it has become commercial. I have a lot of time working in this movement. At times, I’ll take a year then I’ll come back out with music. I nourish myself from other musical genres and work with other musicians to prepare for future projects.

Reggaetonline.net: Can you talk about your work on ‘Mas Flow’?

Baby Ranks: Mas Flow was a tremendous experience for me because from there I defined myself as an artist. That was where the genre exploded. Luny Tunes gave me an opportunity to work with them and I’m very grateful for that. It was also an experience because I was able to be a producer. It was my first opportunity to say ‘look, I like this, too.’ So we made a great album, thank God, one of the highest selling ones. I was able to create ‘Mayor Que Yo’ (Older than Me) working alongside the very best reggaeton artists.

Reggaetonline.net: What can we expect coming up from Baby Ranks?

Baby Ranks: Right now, I’m concentrating on my album. I want to release it in 2008. Apart from that I’m producing for other artists; I won’t reveal their names, though. But really, I’m focused on my album. I’m coming with a lot of different things: dancehall, reggae roots, I’m coming with another way, but very professional.

Reggaetonline.net: What do you think the future will bring for reggaeton?

Baby Ranks: Reggaeton will evolve, it simply must happen, but it’ll happen slowly. The music is like a wheel, it goes up and down. At this moment, reggaeton is passing through a lapse and a process. Those that don’t understand probably think ‘oh, reggaeton is dying.’ Everything is like a force of gravity, it rises and falls. Other musical genres are going to have their space. Reggaeton will continue moving forward as the artists try new things and release new music. This way you don’t get bored with the same thing. I think that is what’s happening right now.
