Who would have thought that Daddy Yankee would encounter impersonators before his music could reach a worldwide audience? An exact copy of Daddy Yankee’s smash hit, Gasolina and its video have been produced by a artist known as Papa A.P. and marketed in Europe as his own in hopes of making a quick buck before the real Gasolina reached France. Now German fans of reggaeton are faced with 2 versions of Gasolina. The early arrival of the cover version has cause confusion and controversy.
Papa A. P. is signed with EDEL , which is a label that serves the central European markets. This includes countries such as Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Great Britain, as well as France. Papa A.P.’s cover version of Gasolina was released in Europe on March the 23rd; Daddy Yankee’s original version was released on May 17th. A third version, Gasolina “ranchero” is also being played on radio stations proving that Yankee is now where all other artists wish there were; number one in the hearts of reggaeton fans.
Fans are astonished and do not understand why anyone would do a remake of a song that is an exact copy of the original. “A few months ago I saw a story on El Gordo y La Flaca, that Yankee went to court for his ''Gasolina'' and it turned out that they wanted to do a Mexican version,” Larry Myers of Rio Rico, Arizona stated. Denis Arrufat Gimeno of Benztown, Germany comments, “A great thing is that on the VIVA homepage [a German website], they started a Gasolina voting, asking Germany which [version] they liked more. Daddy Yankee [won] the race, 80% to 20%. Regarding the [opinion polls] in France, [the result] was the other way round.”
American audiences are used to parodies by artist such as Weird Al Yankovic. Weird Al has done popular versions of songs such as Michael Jackson’s ‘Beat It’, Coolio’s ‘Gangsters Paradise’, and Nirvana’s ‘Smells like Teens Spirit’ (‘Eat It’, ‘Amish Paradise’ and ‘Smells Like Nirvana’ respectively). His versions are creative and unique, and done in good taste; surfacing awhile after the original hits the charts. It is one thing to do a parody of a song, but these recent versions of Gasolina feel like the reggaeton version of Star Wars, Attack of the Clones.
With the success of Barrio Fino, fans all over the world know that Daddy Yankee is the Original Cangri whose talent and style cannot be reproduced. Although Daddy Yankee could not be reached for comments, the world of reggaeton knows he has produced too many high quality tracks to be phased by imposters. Those who have come to love Gasolina, consider recent attempts to recreate the hit single comic relief.
