Just as in the history of Hip-Hop, many people assume that the artists and producers in the business are either untrained or have very little education in the music field. Contrary to this popular belief, many people study hard to make their way into the music industry, and Alex Monserrate is one of the many examples we find in Reggaeton. Now known simply as Monserrate, he works along side his partner DJ Urba forming the duo known as Los Jedais and they make some of the best beats in the genre.

Born in San Juan, Puerto Rico in 1985, since he was a child he always had a deep appreciation for music. When asked where he got his start in music, Monserrate told Reggaetonline.net: I studied piano from the age of 4 until he was 17 in one of the most recognized schools of music in Puerto Rico. He also admits that he studied to become an airplane pilot as well. Although he learned his craft well in school, he had no clue that he would one day become such an important player in the world of Reggaeton.

With all his years of studying music under his resume, he was made aware that Daddy Yankee was looking for a producer with a deep knowledge of music. He gave me a contract to produce his first Barrio Fino CD and later he contacted me again for the second Bario Fino album (En Directo) and we won a few Grammies for our work, Monserrate explained. He produced songs like: Dale Caliente, Mami No Me Dejes Solo, Rompe, Machete, Taladro, El Muro, Que Vas a Hacer, El Truco, as well as other hits.

However his good fortune did not begin with Barrio Fino. When I first started, I had a vast knowledge of music but no knowledge of Reggaeton. I hooked up with Urba because he had more knowledge of Reggaeton and working with him I learned how to produce beats in 5 months. I started working with Wisin & Yandel in 2003 and produced El Sobrevivente for Wisin. We produced hits like Saoco (feat. Daddy Yankee) and La Gitana. Yandels album (Quien Contra Mi) was produced with Luny Tunes and that is why they both have different sounds and they are both good albums. Wisin & Yandel, they have their formula together, even though working separately Yandel was working more towards a romantic theme and Wisins album is more street. I have also worked with Tony Dize and Alexis & Fido, Tego Calderon, Yaviah, and Noztra.

Monserrate and DJ Urba are hard at work on future projects. Right now we finished working on Wisin & Yandels Los Vaqueros. They have some good artist with whom I work with as well like Franco El Gorila and El Tio. We are also working on our first production, Los Jedais

The caliber of work that DJ Monserrate does is way beyond the skills of a gentleman his age. Once he only dreamed of accomplishing all that he has achieved. I never thought I would have a chance to be a producer and I never ever would have pictured myself on stage accepting awards for my work. If you put all your faith in the hands of God, you will always be successful.
