March 02, 2007
Last night, March 1st 2007, was the third annual Reggaeton People’s Choice Awards. This was award show is the way that one special fan known as Javier 4x4 decided to say thanks for giving him the music he enjoys the most. The show took a lot of planning and was actually planned on a scale of a large award show with all the perks.
The show started off with a bang, however as the night moved on, it ended with a small fizzle. The bang was the opening performance with belly dancers and all, and the possibility that the fans in attendance would see some of the biggest names in Reggaeton. With the call of the names of the first few nominees it was evident that many of the mainstream artists were no shows. The only excuse for this would be if the artists had a concert or previously scheduled venue. The show also started late, and many of the people introducing the nominees failed to show up. Those who walked away last night knew Javier 4x4did his best.
For whatever case, fans were very disappointed in artists not showing up to accept their awards in person. In place of Don Omar, his mother accepted his award on his behalf. Now let’s just be frank, unless you are 2Pac or The Notorious Big, and six feet under, fans will never be excited to see your mom accept an award.
When the show began we all had an excellent view of the stage. Once the show started those who arrived late or could not immediate let find a seat in the darkness gathered in front of the people seated by the door. At this point, I, nor anyone seated in the very front, could see anything happening on stage. I can only speculate that this is one of the reasons why many people started to leave early, and I personally do not blame them.
The fans who voted knew that there were over 30 categories, so it was a bugar of a job to present all these awards live and keep the show going strong. However, if the winning artist, like Ivy Queen, Don Omar, Daddy Yankee and Wisin and Yandel would have show n up, any errors or slow spots in the show would have been overlooked.
The artists and producers who were in attendance all deserve props because they realize that what the fans think and feel is the most important. They also were grateful to accept any award given to them. The list of artists and producers includes people like:
Arcangel,
De la ghetto
Jowell, Randy
Tito El Bambino
Luny Tunes and Mas Flow
Deevani
Voltio
Jomar
Andy Boy
John Eric
Aliel
You hear artists tell you on MTV that their fans, the public and where they come from are very important. When the artist jump to show up at award shows in the United States and fail to show up at a show in their own back yards catered toward them, it send fans a huge message. Artist says they will never forget where they come from, but last night they did. My question for the artist is:
If you can’t take a Reggaeton award show in Puerto Rico seriously, how do you expect people to take you seriously?
