Known for its long-time support of and association with Latin music, Heineken USA announced the addition of reggaeton great Tego Calderón to the headlining artists set to perform for Heineken's AmsterJam 2006, Heineken's unique summer music festival featuring mash-ups and solo sets. Tego will be paired for a mash-up performance with another headlining artist of a different genre for a spectacular and memorable collaborative performance. Headliners already on board for the event are legendary rock and roll idols Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, celebrated platinum recording artists The Foo Fighters, and rap icon LL Cool J. Specific artist mash-ups and additional main stage artists will be announced shortly. Contemporary Puerto Rican band Yerbabuena has been confirmed for the second stage, and other Latin acts will follow. Tickets for the event are available for purchase at Ticketmaster.com.
Tego's mash-up at Heineken's AmsterJam alongside other music icons marks his reaffirmation as the father of reggaeton. Busy in the studio preparing for his next album "THE UNDERDOG/ "EL SUBESTIMADO" due out on Jiggiri/Atlantic Records on August 29th 2006, Tego has been absent from the ultra-hot reggaeton scene of late. Though he paved the way for many newly discovered Latino artists with his original beats, Spanish rap and Latino-centric sounds, it's this new generation of artists that seem to have taken over the spotlight. Not any longer.
Heineken's AmsterJam will take place Saturday, August 19th on New York's Randall's Island. Heineken's sold-out, day-long festival last year featured mash-ups and solo sets by super-stars in rock, hip hop and Latin music in on-the-spot collaborations including: the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Snoop Dogg, 311 and Wyclef Jean, Garbage and Peaches and Fat Joe and Hector El Bambino. Funk legend Bootsy Collins was the festival's curator. The second stage featured Gogol Bordello, The Brought Low, Antibalas, Grand Master Flash and more.
About Tego Calder ón
Born in Santurce, Puerto Rico, Tego Calderón forged his own multicultural rap style, earning a reputation as a street poet with a fresh musical approach in his home country. He credits fellow Puerto Rican hip-hop pioneer Vico C with inspiring him to rap in Spanish, instead of imitating the English catch phrases of African-American hip-hop. His first album, "EL ABAYARDE" released in 2002, broke sales records in the then-underground reggaeton genre, selling a remarkable 50,000 copies on the first day of its release, and made Tego an overnight Latin superstar. As Latin rappers have been embraced by the American hip-hop culture, Tego has been featured on
a variety of mix tapes and has been invited to add his trademark vocal style to collaborations
and remixes by the likes of Fat Joe's Terror Squad (the #1 smash, "Lean Back"), Usher, 50 Cent, Cypress Hill, and Wyclef Jean.
From his appearances at New York's annual Puerto Rican Day parades in 2004 and 2005, to becoming the first Spanish-language artist to be featured on New York radio station, Power-105, Tego has been breaking cultural barriers. Among Tego's achievements are Latin Grammy and Billboard Award nominations, a Source Award for "International Artist of the Year," a Tu Música award, and nominations for La Gente and Lo Nuestro awards.
In the spring of 2005, Tego signed with Atlantic Records via a deal with his own Jiggiri Records label -- becoming the first reggaeton artist to ink a global pact with a major label. His second proper album, "THE UNDERDOG / "EL SUBESTIMADO," is due out from Jiggiri/Atlantic Records on August 29th 2006.
