Reggaeton fans have been waiting for years to see their favorite artist on the big screen. “Illegal Tender” not only offers fans a great movie that features Latinos, but also allows Reggaeton artist Tego Calderon to strut his stuff in front of the camera. Set to be released in theaters this Friday, August 24th, Illegal Tender will be the movie that shows the world those Reggaeton artists know more than just perreao.
The movie "Illegal Tender" is directed by Franc Reyes ("Empire") and produced by John Singleton ("Hustle & Flow," "Shaft"). John Singleton has the ability to paint show the lives of his characters, who are often minorities, onscreen in a realistic and believable way.
"Illegal Tender" is the story of Mille DeLeon and her son Wilson Jr., played by Wanda De Jesus and Rick Gonzalez. DeLeon lives the average American life, with the exception of being a widow of a hard core drug dealer. She is a strong Latina who works hard to raises two sons who are unaware that their mother is hiding from her late husbands past. She lives life continuously looking over her shoulder for mobsters who want payback for her late husband’s mistakes.
When trouble comes she relocates her family and starts a new life; however this time her teenage son, Wilson Jr., decides that it is time to stop running and stand and fight. During his struggle to cut his families mod ties, he is befriended by Ganster Choco (Tego Calderon).
Tego has always been known for his ability to appear like the dictionary’s definition of ‘cool.’ He seems calm under pressure and his signature afro is never out of place. To Reggaeton fans, the choice of Tego Calderon for the role of Choco seems to be a natural choice. Tego’s debut will no doubt please his fans as well as open doors for him in the future. August 24th will definitely be a day marking a major milestone for Tego.
