Vico C Resides in Orlando Florida, but his love for Puerto Rico is still very strong. His career is doing very good. Vico Cs appeals to both Hip-hop and Rap audiences. Now he is going to be a part of a musical and he just put out a new live album with a DVD called El Encuertro (the encounter). It was recorded in Puerto Rico at Roberto Clemente Coliseum. Vico is known and admired for his lives shows. “The quality of El Encuentro is really good. “ I sing with a band, were as many of the artists now-a-days just bring a DJ. We really do a show for the fans. What will make me grow, is the fact that people see the quality of the show, the will appreciate my music a little better,” says Vico.
Younger Reggaeton fans say his career is slowing down because he is one of the older artists. Vico answers this by simply saying people get confused sometimes especially when they can’t see what happens behind the scenes. “This is the first time I have heard someone even ask me this kind of question,”Vico says when with a chuckle, “right now, ironically I am doing more now than I have done maybe in the past ten years. So it doesn’t bother me because I know the truth, I know the reality of the music world. People look at [music careers] like people are supposed to be dethroned. The record sells is the main thing that speaks for one’s career, as well as the attendance at the shows and the reaction that people have to you on the streets. If I stay another five years and I still get stronger, then I will be happy. I still have 14 and 15 year old fans coming to me, and they didn’t experience my career before, all they know about me is what they have learned now.” Vico C feels that people should truly take time to analyze thing s as individuals and be non conformist when it comes to their musical taste. Don’t go with the mainstream, just because it’s what’s cool, make your own decisions.
Many see Vico C as a Hip-hop artist and some see him as the pioneer of Reggaeton in Puerto Rico. “They see that because it’s difficult to separate Reggaeton from Hip-hop when it comes to Latin beats. Reggaeton started in Jamaica and the United states.” Vico C says that what he calls rope-a dope style that was prevalent in hip-hop in the 80, was more compatible with Puerto Rican music styles like Bomba. He continues to say “You can mix a Bomba easily with Reggaeton, but you can’t mix Lil Jon’s hip hop as easily. You would really have to take the time to produce it. This is why the beat became more important in Puerto Rico in the United States. Some can’t make the distinction because Reggaeton comes from a hop-hop kind of environment.
Many new fans wonder, when Vico started incorporating Reggaeton into his music. Vico’s part in the Reggaeton movement began 10 years ago.“When Bob Marley came out with his greatest hits, The Reggae movement came back with old songs. In 1990 I recorded a song called ‘She Likes My Reggae’, It wasn’t like what we call Reggaeton right now, but that song came right at the start to the use of the word Reggae in this movement. 1991 I recorded “Bomba P ara A Fincar” and that is more of a Reggaeton type of sound. Then Reggaeton really started in the underground, and they called it Perreo, Dembow, they called it many names when it was an underground movement.
This year Vico C is coming out with three albums. He will have one which is coming out with songs that people may not have heard. Second is the musical and the third will be, of course, his new album with new music. So Vico as usual has a lot in store for fans. For now, El Encuentro is a very good live album with a DVD to ease the pain of any Vico C fan.
